Foreign Students

PPGN makes public the Process for Issuing Letters of Acceptance for the Foreign Student Program selection.

Foreign candidates who are interested in joining PPGN may do so in the following cases:

  1. If they have a scholarship from their own country, organization, educational institution, or foreign funding agency;
  2. Through a scholarship notice promoted by an organization, educational institution, or funding agency (CAPES, CNPq, UFSC) for foreign students;
  1. Through PPGN Master’s and Doctoral selection process (with no scholarship guaranteed).

For cases 1 and 2, candidates are not required to undergo the PPGN Master’s and Doctoral selection process.

For candidates who don’t have the possibility of a scholarship from their own country, PPGN suggests applying for a scholarship through the Postgraduate Student-Agreement Program (PEC-PG). (The scholarship application is the sole responsibility of the foreign applicant). Another option is, once approved in the PPGN Master’s and Doctoral selection notice, to apply for a scholarship from the program itself—subject to the availability of quotas and the regulations of the funding agencies.

The Graduate Student Agreement Program (PEC-PG), officially created in 1981, offers scholarships to nationals of developing countries with which Brazil has a cultural and/or educational cooperation agreement, for education in strictu sensu graduate courses (master’s and doctorate) in Brazilian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

The following benefits are offered to the recipients:

– Vacancies in Brazilian HEIs recommended by Capes, without registration costs;

– Monthly scholarship in the same amount as that offered to Brazilian students, namely:

R$2,100.00 for master’s degrees, with a maximum duration of 24 months, and R$3,100.00

for doctorates, with a maximum duration of 48 months; and

– return flight ticket to the foreign student’s country.

The PEC-PG is managed in partnership by three agencies:

By the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), through the Division of Educational Themes (DCE), which is responsible for publicizing the Program abroad and paying for students’ return tickets; by the Ministry of Education (MEC), through the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), which is responsible for the selection and payment of doctoral scholarships for students from all participating countries and master’s scholarships for students from Timor-Leste; and by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), through the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), which is responsible for the selection and payment of master’s scholarships for students from all participating countries, except for Timor-Leste.
